Cushion is a padding within the sock created by knit terry loops. The cushioning provides added protection in high impact areas, shock absorption, and extra warmth and comfort.
A thin knit with no lift from terry loops in the socks. Regardless of yarn weight, this is a thin sock.
Terry loops underfoot and other areas of the sock, but does not wrap the foot. Our most popular, versatile cushion style.
The terry loops run the entire length of the sock, or at least up to the cuff, for a full wrap of cushion around the foot and leg.
A few of our Ski & Snowboard socks feature targeted cushioning in the shin that is separate from the foot. In our Work socks category, we also carry socks specifically for steel-toe footwear with extended cushioning in the toe.
Yarn comes in weights, and while measured in microns, it can make a difference. What you might consider outdoor socks are midweight and higher. For categories like our running socks, skiing socks, and casual socks, ultra-lightweight and lightweight are standard.
The absolute lowest profile that is nearly a second skin. Even with cushion, these socks are sleek and silky smooth.
The most versatile weight found in practically every sock category. When accompanied with cushion, some consider this weight the most sublime combination we knit.
With the outdoors in mind, this is where our hiking socks and ski socks made their name. More natural insulation, and so durable they are a thru-hiker staple.
Our warmest socks. Always with cushion, if not a full cushion of terry loops, these usually have the highest Merino Wool content of any styles with maximum Merino benefits.
In order to determine your sock size, first determine what size shoe you wear. Your shoe size will tell you which size you need for your socks. Our sock sizes each fit 2-3 shoe sizes. If you fall in between two of the size categories, size up. For more information, refer to our sock sizing chart.
Socks are not one size fits all, but each of our sock sizes does fit a few shoe sizes. Socks will fit people with different sized feet due to their stretch; however, for the best results you want a sock that fits properly. For more information on sizing, refer to our sock sizing chart.
Sock size and shoe size are not the same; however, your shoe size will help you determine which sock size you are. For example, if you wear a men's size 11 shoe, you will want a men's large sock since the men's large fits shoe sizes 10-12.
If you're not sure what size sock you need, first check your shoe size, refer to our sock sizing chart, and then pick the size sock your shoe size correlates with. If you're in between sizes, we recommend sizing up to the next sock size.
If you haven't worn Darn Tough socks before, be sure to check our sock sizing chart and compare your shoe size to our sock sizes (size up if you're in between sizes). If you have a pair of our socks and you're not sure what size they are, check the inside of the sock cuff, where we knit the size (e.g. "M" for medium).
